Born in England 1985, Sam Ash currently lives and works from Sydney, Australia. Since his arrival from England seven years ago, he has established himself as a much sought-after independent fine art photographer. Using the technique of 35mm film to produce his work; with each image taken to be there as a witness of life and a poetic story.
Sam’s work can only be described as personal recollections of life and the patient observations of others. Defined by the dramatic way he uses natural light or the absence of it, narrative emerges from dark shadows or the liminal, half-light of dusk. The viewer is caught in that transitional space between past and present, memory and forgetting. Ash presents a rich and hauntingly beautiful tableau, which gives testimony to the immense potency of the photographic medium. Always with an open eye capturing the simple way of life by looking deeper at lesser-noticed things.
A sense of youth, beauty and serenity is achieved throughout. Documenting the fundamental idealism of this native lands, with a strong sense of stillness and tranquility, highlighting an underlying mysterious world and giving a calm and peaceful experience to the viewer.
Sam has been exhibiting in Australia for the past three years at Monster Children Gallery, Schubert Contemporary Gallery, Chalk Horse Gallery, United Gallery, Anthea Polson Gallery and featured as “Renault New Generation Artists” at the 2008 Sydney Art Fair. Ash’s first published book with Rainoff Books titled “Never Far” received much acclaim within the arts community and defines the simplistic methods of his photography.
